A Hybrid Prime

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.4 L VCM Lens is a versatile prime lens crafted for both photo and video, ideal for full-frame RF-mount camera systems. Its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture and 11-bladed diaphragm make it highly capable in low-light settings while producing beautifully soft, dreamy bokeh. Designed with a hybrid approach, this lens incorporates a video-optimized Voice Coil Motor (VCM) rear focus system alongside a Nano USM for accurate and near-silent autofocus. Enhanced with a manual iris ring and an AF/MF switch, it offers precise focus control and quick adjustments. As part of Canon’s L-series, this lens is built for durability, with a weather-resistant design to guard against dust and moisture in challenging environments.

Optical Design

Featuring one ultra-low dispersion element and two aspherical elements, this lens delivers impressive image quality while effectively reducing chromatic aberrations. To significantly minimize ghosting and flare, Canon has applied ASC (Air Sphere Coating), SSC (Super Spectra Coating), and a Fluorine coating, ensuring clear and vibrant visuals across various lighting conditions.

Additional Lens Benefits

This lens features a programmable custom function button, allowing quick access to preferred settings for seamless adjustments while shooting. With 14 elements in 11 groups, including one UD element and two aspherical elements, it delivers exceptional image quality. A close 15.7" minimum focus distance enhances its suitability for detailed close-up shots, and the 67mm filter thread ensures compatibility with a broad range of filters.

Benjamin ★★★★★

I’ve been using this lens for hybrid shoots and the manual aperture ring with de-click option is a game-changer for smooth video exposure transitions. The f/1.4 aperture also gives dreamy background separation, even in dim light.

Carter Y. ★★★★★

The VCM motor makes focusing dead silent during video, which is a huge plus for run-and-gun shooting. I love how the f/1.4 aperture lets in so much light in dim conditions. Tack sharp even wide open.

Lily ★★★★★

I’ve been using this lens for hybrid shoots, and the f/1.4 aperture gives a really dreamy separation between subject and background. The VCM motor is whisper-quiet during video, which makes a huge difference when recording in quiet spaces.
